About Barceloneta Beach
Barcelona's most famous urban beach, a long stretch of golden sand adjacent to the charming 18th-century Barceloneta neighbourhood, with beach bars, seafood restaurants, and the Frank Gehry fish sculpture.
Barceloneta Beach is the most celebrated urban beach in Spain and one of the defining symbols of modern Barcelona. The beach extends for about 1.1 kilometres between the Barceloneta neighbourhood and the Port Olímpic, offering golden sand, warm Mediterranean water, and a vibrant beach culture that draws locals and tourists throughout the summer. The Barceloneta neighbourhood, a grid of narrow streets built in the 18th century to house sailors and fishermen, is famous for its seafood restaurants serving the freshest paella valenciana, fideuà, and grilled fish. At the northern end of the beach stands the magnificent bronze fish sculpture by Frank Gehry, created for the 1992 Olympic Games. The beach was largely created in its current form for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, which transformed the city's entire waterfront.
Did you know? Barcelona's waterfront was almost entirely industrial before the 1992 Olympics, the beach was created as part of the city's spectacular Olympic transformation that buried railway lines and demolished warehouses.
