About El Born Neighbourhood

Barcelona's most stylish neighbourhood, a medieval quarter of narrow streets, Picasso Museum, Santa Maria del Mar church, designer boutiques, creative restaurants, and the covered El Born market building over excavated 1714 ruins.

El Born, officially the Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera district, is the most fashionable neighbourhood in Barcelona, a medieval area of narrow streets that has been transformed over the past two decades into the city's premier destination for independent design shops, creative restaurants, art galleries, and cultural institutions. The neighbourhood contains several of Barcelona's most important sights: the Picasso Museum, the extraordinary Gothic church of Santa Maria del Mar, the covered El Born market building (under whose Victorian iron canopy the excavated remains of the city destroyed by Philip V in 1714 are preserved), and the Carrer de Montcada, one of the most beautiful medieval streets in the city.

Did you know? The El Born Cultural Centre contains the preserved ruins of an entire neighbourhood of Barcelona destroyed in 1714 when Philip V bombarded the city after the Catalans' defeat in the War of the Spanish Succession.
