About Plantin-Moretus Museum
A UNESCO World Heritage printing house, the oldest printing presses in existence and a Gutenberg Bible in a 16th-century family home, one of Belgium's most extraordinary museums.
The Plantin-Moretus Museum is one of the most remarkable museums in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves the complete printing house of Christophe Plantin and his successors, the Moretus family, in the original building where they lived and worked from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century.
Christophe Plantin established his printing house in Antwerp in 1555 and built it into the most important printing establishment in the world, producing books for royal courts, universities, and religious institutions across Europe. The museum preserves two of the oldest functioning printing presses in existence, a remarkable library including a Gutenberg Bible, original copper printing plates used for the Plantin typefaces, and the family's own art collection, with works by Rubens, who was personally connected to the Moretus family.
The building itself, a magnificent sixteenth-century patrician house with courtyard and garden, is extraordinarily well preserved, with period rooms, furniture, and equipment that give visitors an unparalleled sense of how an early modern printing house actually functioned.
Did you know? The Plantin-Moretus Museum is the only museum in the world on the UNESCO World Heritage list because of its complete preserved printing house, building, equipment, library, and family collection together.
