MAS, Museum aan de Stroom (Museum on the Stream), is one of the most dramatic museum buildings in Belgium, a soaring ten-storey tower of stacked red sandstone and glass in the regenerated Eilandje district of northern Antwerp's port area. Completed in 2011 and designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects, the building has become an iconic landmark of new Antwerp, visible from the Scheldt and from much of the city.
The museum's collection and programme explore the relationship between Antwerp and the world: the port's history as one of Europe's great trading hubs, the stories of the peoples and cultures that passed through or settled in the city, and Antwerp's ongoing place in global trade and culture. The permanent collection integrates objects from ethnographic, archaeological, maritime, and decorative arts collections into a narrative about exchange and connection.
