About Grote Markt
Antwerp's grand central square, dominated by the stunning Renaissance Town Hall and flanked by ornate guild houses, with the Brabo Fountain at its heart.
Antwerp's Grote Markt is one of the most beautiful market squares in Belgium, a coherent composition of Renaissance and late-Gothic architecture centred on the magnificent Town Hall completed in 1565. The Town Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a masterpiece of Flemish Renaissance architecture designed by Cornelis Floris de Vriendt, with its elaborate facade combining Italian Renaissance elements with native Flemish traditions.
Flanking the Town Hall and along the square's edges stand the guild houses of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, each with distinctive stepped gables and gilded emblems reflecting the guild that built it. At the centre of the square stands the Brabo Fountain, depicting the Roman soldier Silvius Brabo about to hurl the severed hand of the giant Antigoon into the Scheldt, the legendary origin of the name Antwerpen ('hand throwing'). The square is the civic heart of Antwerp, hosting markets, festivals, and public events throughout the year.
