About Anne Frank House

The canal house where Anne Frank and her family hid from Nazi persecution for over two years, her original diary preserved on-site.

The Anne Frank House at Prinsengracht 263 is one of the most visited and emotionally powerful sites in Amsterdam. From July 1942 to August 1944, Otto Frank, his wife, their two daughters Margot and Anne, and four others hid in the concealed rear rooms, the Secret Annexe, of this seventeenth-century canal house, aided by trusted colleagues who smuggled in food and supplies. On 4 August 1944 the hiding place was raided; all eight were arrested and deported to concentration camps. Only Otto Frank survived. His daughter Anne had kept a meticulous diary during the hiding period, which Miep Gies rescued from the raided annexe after the war. First published in 1947, the diary has since been translated into over 70 languages and sold more than 30 million copies. The house is preserved with deliberate restraint, the annexe rooms remain unfurnished, Anne's magazine clippings still on the wall, and Otto's pencil height marks still visible. Over 1.2 million people visit each year.

Did you know? The entrance to the Secret Annexe was concealed behind a rotating bookcase filled with grey binders, none of the building's other occupants suspected it existed.
