About Herengracht
The most prestigious of Amsterdam's three main canals, lined with 17th-century merchant mansions and the famous Golden Bend.
Herengracht, the "Gentlemen's Canal", is the innermost and most prestigious of the three great concentric canals dug in Amsterdam's seventeenth-century Golden Age expansion. Stretching for approximately 2.6 kilometres, it was designated for the wealthiest merchants and city officials, who built their tall, narrow step-gabled or neck-gabled houses along its banks as statements of commercial success. The most celebrated stretch is the Golden Bend (Gouden Bocht), between Leidsestraat and Vijzelstraat, where the canal widens and the houses become unusually broad and grand, some of the finest canal houses in the world. The Willet-Holthuysen Museum at Herengracht 605 preserves an authentic seventeenth-century canal house interior. The canal forms part of the Amsterdam canal ring, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. House numbers run from the IJ waterfront to the Amstel river and back, reaching over 600.
Did you know? Amsterdam's canal ring (including Herengracht) was built using 2,500 wooden pilings per house, driven up to 18 metres into the sandy soil.
