About Rijksmuseum
The Netherlands' premier national museum, home to Rembrandt's Night Watch and an incomparable collection of Dutch Golden Age masterpieces.
The Rijksmuseum is the Netherlands' national museum of art and history, located at the southern end of Museumplein in central Amsterdam. Designed by architect Pierre Cuypers in a neo-Gothic Renaissance style, the building opened in 1885 and underwent a comprehensive ten-year renovation completed in 2013. The museum's collection spans eight centuries of Dutch art and history, housing over one million objects with approximately eight thousand on permanent display across eighty galleries. Its most celebrated works include Rembrandt van Rijn's The Night Watch (1642), Johannes Vermeer's The Milkmaid, and dozens of other Dutch and Flemish masterpieces. Remarkable collections of Delftware pottery, antique silver, and miniature dollhouses round out the experience. The building itself is a secular cathedral to Dutch achievement, its walls covered in Cuypers' original mosaics, tiles, and painted decorations. With approximately 2.5 million visitors annually, it is the most visited museum in the Netherlands.
Did you know? The Night Watch was cut down in 1715 to fit a smaller doorway, the removed strips have never been found.
