About Kunsthaus Zürich

Switzerland's most important art museum, housing an exceptional collection including the largest Munch holdings outside Scandinavia, Monet, and major Giacometti works.

The Kunsthaus Zürich is the most significant art museum in Switzerland, with a history stretching back to the Zürich Art Society founded in 1787. The original Beaux-Arts building, designed by Karl Moser and opened in 1910, was dramatically expanded in 2021 with a stunning new wing by David Chipperfield Architects that doubled the museum's gallery space. The collection spans seven centuries of art, from medieval altarpieces to cutting-edge contemporary work. Among its greatest treasures is the largest collection of Edvard Munch's works outside of Norway, over a hundred paintings, drawings, and prints acquired largely from a single bequest. The museum also holds major works by Claude Monet, including luminous water-lily canvases, an extensive Alberto Giacometti collection (the sculptor was born in the canton of Graubünden, near Zurich), and important works by Picasso, Chagall, Matisse, Francis Bacon, and Gerhard Richter. The new Chipperfield wing, connected to the original building by an underground passage, is itself an architectural masterpiece of restrained elegance.

Did you know? The Kunsthaus holds the largest collection of Edvard Munch's works outside Scandinavia, over 100 paintings, drawings, and prints.
