About Grossmünster
The iconic twin-towered Romanesque cathedral of Zurich, where Ulrich Zwingli launched the Swiss Reformation in 1519.
The Grossmünster, or "Great Minster," is Zurich's most recognizable landmark, its twin Romanesque towers rising majestically above the Limmat River since the 12th century. According to legend, Charlemagne founded the church on the grave of Zurich's patron saints Felix and Regula. The cathedral achieved lasting historical fame when reformer Ulrich Zwingli began preaching here in 1519, sparking the Swiss Protestant Reformation. Inside, the crypt retains its original Romanesque character, while the nave features stunning stained-glass windows created by Augusto Giacometti in 1932 and modern bronze doors by Otto Münch. The twin towers, accessible via narrow staircases, offer panoramic views over the old town rooftops and Lake Zurich. The cathedral remains an active place of worship and stands as the spiritual heart of Protestant Zurich, drawing visitors from around the world to contemplate both its architectural grandeur and its profound role in reshaping European Christianity.
Did you know? Charlemagne's horse is said to have knelt here, leading him to build the cathedral over the graves of Zurich's patron saints Felix and Regula.
