About Sunnegga and Leisee

A sunny mountain terrace above Zermatt, reached by an underground funicular, with the little Leisee lake that mirrors the Matterhorn and a lakeside beach and playground for families.

Sunnegga is a sunny terrace about two kilometres above Zermatt, at around 2,300 metres, reached from the village by an underground funicular that climbs through a tunnel in under five minutes, opened in 1980 as Switzerland's first underground funicular. From the terrace the Matterhorn is seen especially well, and the spot is the start of many summer walks and a junction of ski pistes in winter; a gondola continues from here up to Blauherd.

A short walk or shuttle below, at 2,232 metres, lies the Leisee, a small mountain lake that is Zermatt's unlikely bathing beach and a favourite with families. Its shallow water warms enough to swim in summer, and there is a playground, picnic spots and a play raft, with the Matterhorn mirrored in the calm water. The Leisee is the last of the five lakes on the Five-Lakes Walk, the 5-Seenweg, which starts higher up at Blauherd and passes the hamlet of Findeln.

Did you know? Sunnegga is reached by an underground funicular that climbs through the rock in under five minutes; opened in 1980, it was the first underground funicular in Switzerland.
