About Matterhorn Museum (Zermatlantis)
An underground museum beneath a glass pyramid in the village centre, recreating old Zermatt around a square and telling the story of the 1865 first ascent, including the broken rope.
The Matterhorn Museum, called Zermatlantis, lies underground beneath a glass pyramid on the Kirchplatz in the centre of Zermatt. Opened in 2006, it recreates a mountain village of fourteen buildings around a paved square, among them a guide's house, a dairy, a stable and the old reception of the Hotel Monte Rosa, telling how Zermatt grew from a farming village into a world-famous resort. At its heart is the story of the Matterhorn's first ascent on 14 July 1865 and the tragedy on the descent.
The museum's most famous exhibit is the broken rope itself, the one that parted between Lord Francis Douglas and the guide Taugwalder during the fatal descent, displayed with equipment and belongings of the climbers. It also honours later alpinists, among them the Zermatt guide Ulrich Inderbinen, who climbed the Matterhorn 371 times. Among its treasures are Roman coins from the Theodul Pass and even a stone carried to the Matterhorn's summit and back aboard a Space Shuttle.
