About Holy Trinity, Goodramgate

A perfect, forgotten medieval church hidden off the street, never modernised, with a rolling, uneven floor, the only surviving box pews in York, and glass showing the rector who gave it in 1471.

Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, is a small medieval parish church hidden behind a row of cottages off Goodramgate, easily missed from the street. Dating from the 12th to 15th centuries, it was never modernised or heavily restored, and so survives as a rare, atmospheric example of an old English parish church, with an uneven, sloping floor and leaning arcades. It keeps its 17th- and 18th-century wooden box pews, said to be the only church in York still to have them, and a two-tier 'double-decker' pulpit of 1659. Its east window holds fine 15th-century stained glass, given in 1471 by the rector John Walker, who had himself depicted kneeling within it. Declared redundant in 1971 and cared for since 1972 by the Churches Conservation Trust, this Grade I listed church lies within the historic city of York.

Did you know? Holy Trinity kept its high wooden box pews, added in the 1600s and 1700s so families could shut out the draughts and pray in private, said to be the only church in York still to have them.
