The Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, known universally as the GAM, is the oldest museum of modern art in Italy, founded in 1863. It occupies a purpose-built neoclassical building in the city centre and holds a permanent collection of over 45,000 works spanning the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collection is particularly strong in Italian art of the Risorgimento period and beyond, Macchiaioli, Divisionism, Futurism, and includes important works by Giovanni Boldini, Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo (whose famous Il Quarto Stato is unfortunately in Milan, but the GAM holds related works), Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carrà, and Felice Casorati. The museum also has a significant collection of Arte Povera, the Italian conceptual movement of the 1960s-70s that was born partly in Turin, with works by Mario Merz, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Giovanni Anselmo. The temporary exhibition programme is ambitious and regularly brings major international shows to Turin.
