About Piazza del Duomo
The grandest Baroque ensemble in Sicily and one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, where the Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace, and the Town Hall create a perfect oval of honey-coloured limestone.
The Piazza del Duomo is the beating heart of Ortigia and one of the finest Baroque spaces in Europe. Oval in form, sloping gently from north to south, the square was given its present magnificent appearance after the catastrophic earthquake of 1693 that destroyed much of eastern Sicily. The buildings that surround it, the Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace, the Palazzo del Senato, and the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia, were all rebuilt or redesigned in the first decades of the 18th century in a coherent Baroque style using the local golden limestone called pietra di Siracusa. The effect, especially in the late afternoon when the light falls obliquely across the facades, is breathtaking. A small fountain with a bronze Diana stands at the lower end of the square.
Did you know? The Piazza del Duomo sits directly above the site of the ancient Greek temenos, the sacred precinct, of Ortigia, which has been in continuous religious use for approximately 2,700 years, making it one of the longest-serving sacred spaces in Europe.
