About Ear of Dionysius

A 23-metre-high artificial cave with a perfectly S-shaped profile in the latomia quarries, named by Caravaggio for its ear-like shape and legendary acoustic properties that allegedly let the tyrant Dionysius eavesdrop on prisoners.

The Ear of Dionysius is one of the most unusual ancient sites in Syracuse: a tall, narrow, S-shaped cave approximately 65 metres long and 23 metres high, carved from the soft limestone walls of the Latomia del Paradiso quarry in the Neapolis Archaeological Park. The cave has extraordinary acoustic properties, sound made at the entrance is amplified and echoed throughout the chamber with remarkable clarity. The name was given by the painter Caravaggio when he visited Syracuse in 1608 or 1609: he is said to have remarked that the cave's shape resembled a human ear, and the name stuck. Local legend has it that the tyrant Dionysius I used the cave as a prison and, by listening through a small opening at the top, could overhear his prisoners' whispered conversations. There is no historical evidence for this, but the acoustics are real and genuinely startling.

Did you know? The acoustic properties of the Ear of Dionysius are so precise that a whisper in the far recesses of the cave can be clearly heard near the entrance, the S-shaped profile and smooth walls act as a perfect acoustic amplifier, concentrating and directing sound towards the opening.
