About Vrelo Bosne

A lovely park at the source of the river Bosna on the city's edge, where clear springs feed ponds and islands linked by wooden bridges, reached along an avenue of plane trees by horse-drawn carriage.

Vrelo Bosne, the 'Spring of the Bosna', is a protected park on the western edge of Sarajevo, at Ilidža, built around the source of the river Bosna at the foot of Mount Igman. Here clear water wells up from many springs to feed ponds, channels and little wooded islands linked by wooden bridges, home to swans and ducks, a green and tranquil escape from the city.

The classic way to reach it is along the Velika Aleja, a straight avenue about three kilometres long, lined with tall plane trees, on foot, by bicycle or in a horse-drawn carriage. Ilidža has been a resort since Roman times and was made a fashionable spa under Austria-Hungary; the carriages have carried visitors to the springs since that era.
