The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Zemaljski muzej, is the country's oldest and most important museum, founded in 1888 under Austro-Hungarian rule. It occupies four grand Renaissance-Revival pavilions around a courtyard laid out as a botanical garden, dotted with medieval carved tombstones, and holds departments of archaeology, ethnology and natural history.
Its greatest treasure is the Sarajevo Haggadah, an illuminated Jewish manuscript made in Spain around 1350 and brought to the city by Sephardic Jews. Written on calfskin and opening with pages of brilliant miniatures, it has survived expulsion, fire and war: hidden from the Nazis by a Muslim librarian, saved again during the siege, it is now kept in a dedicated vault and listed in UNESCO's Memory of the World. The museum itself closed for three years in a funding crisis before reopening in 2015.
