About St Peter's Basilica
The largest church in Christendom, crowned by Michelangelo's magnificent dome and housing Bernini's bronze baldachin and Michelangelo's sublime Pietà.
St Peter's Basilica stands on the site where the Apostle Peter was buried after his martyrdom around 64–68 AD under Nero. The current basilica, replacing Constantine's 4th-century church, was built over more than a century beginning in 1506, with contributions from Bramante, Raphael, Antonio da Sangallo, and ultimately Michelangelo, who designed the great dome completed after his death in 1590.
At 218 metres long and 136 metres wide, it is the largest church in the world. The interior can accommodate over 60,000 people. Michelangelo's Pietà (1499), carved when the artist was just 24, stands behind glass on the right side of the nave, the only work he ever signed, in a fit of pique after hearing credit attributed to another sculptor.
Bernini's bronze baldachin (1623–1634) rises 29 metres above the main altar, taller than the Palazzo Farnese, directly over the tomb of St Peter. Climbing the dome offers incomparable views over Rome and the Vatican Gardens.
Did you know? St Peter's Basilica is so large it contains measurement markers on the nave floor showing how other famous churches, St Paul's in London, Notre-Dame in Paris, would fit inside it.
