About Trevi Fountain

Rome's most theatrical Baroque fountain, built in 1762 by Nicola Salvi, where €3,000 is thrown daily by visitors wishing to return, all donated to charity.

The Trevi Fountain is Rome's most spectacular and beloved fountain, and the largest Baroque fountain in the world at 26 metres high and 49 metres wide. Designed by Nicola Salvi following a 1730 competition, it was completed in 1762 and takes its water from the ancient Aqua Virgo aqueduct, built in 19 BC, water that flows uninterrupted to this day.

The central figure is Neptune, god of the sea, riding a chariot pulled by sea horses, one calm, one wild, guided by Tritons, representing the sea's dual nature. The fountain cleverly uses the back wall of the Palazzo Poli as its backdrop, making the architecture and sculpture one seamless theatrical composition.

The tradition of throwing a coin over the left shoulder to ensure a return to Rome generates approximately €3,000 per day, collected nightly by the city and donated to charity. The fountain appeared in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960) and Audrey Hepburn's Roman Holiday (1953), cementing its iconic status.

Did you know? The average daily coin collection from the Trevi Fountain is over €3,000, all of which goes to Caritas, a Catholic charity that runs a free supermarket for the poor.
