The Douro Valley railway line is widely considered one of the most scenic rail journeys in Europe, a 2.5-hour journey from Porto's São Bento station that follows the Douro river upstream through one of the world's most dramatic wine landscapes. The Douro Valley wine region was demarcated in 1756 by the Marquis of Pombal, making it one of the oldest protected wine appellations in the world, and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 for its extraordinarily beautiful cultural landscape of terraced schist vineyards rising up to 500 metres above the river. The train passes through countless tunnels and along cliff edges, following the river as it winds through steep valleys. The towns of Régua and Pinhão, the heart of the Port wine country, are the main stops. Pinhão station is itself worth visiting for its azulejo tile panels depicting Douro Valley life. Day-trip or overnight visits to the valley are easily arranged from Porto.
