About Estação de São Bento

Porto's central railway station, famous for its entrance hall covered in 20,000 blue-and-white azulejo tile panels painted by Jorge Colaço between 1905 and 1916, depicting scenes from Portuguese history.

Estação de São Bento is Porto's central railway station and one of the most beautiful train stations in the world, its entrance hall constituting one of the greatest examples of azulejo tile art in Portugal. The station was built between 1900 and 1916 on the site of the 16th-century Benedictine convent of São Bento, hence the name, and the building's Beaux-Arts exterior by José Marques da Silva echoes French railway station grandeur. But the extraordinary feature is the interior vestibule: every wall is covered in 20,000 azulejo tile panels painted by artist Jorge Colaço between 1905 and 1916. The panels depict panoramic scenes from Portuguese history and culture: the conquest of Ceuta in 1415, the Battle of Aljubarrota, the arrival of João I in Porto, rural and urban scenes of traditional Portuguese life. The quality and scale of the work is breathtaking, it is among the finest applications of azulejo art in the world.

Did you know? The 20,000 azulejo panels of São Bento station were painted by artist Jorge Colaço over 11 years (1905–1916), a feat of sustained craftsmanship that rivals any monumental public art project in Europe.
