Since 2009, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series has held one of its annual events at Polignano a Mare, and the combination of the world-class athletes, the extraordinary setting of the Cala Porto, and the broadcast reach of the event has made Polignano one of the most internationally recognised places in Puglia. The divers leap from platforms fixed to the cliff face at heights of up to 27 metres for men and 21 metres for women, entering the water at speeds of around 85 km/h. The event draws tens of thousands of spectators to the beach and surrounding cliffs, and it is broadcast worldwide. For those unable to attend, the footage of the event, with the white town above, the sea below, and the human figures arcing through the air, has introduced Polignano to a global audience.
