About Domenico Modugno & Volare

The birthplace and memorial of Domenico Modugno, the Polignano-born singer-songwriter who gave the world 'Volare', the most internationally successful Italian popular song of the 20th century.

Domenico Modugno was born in Polignano a Mare in 1928 and died in 1994. He was one of the most important figures in Italian popular music of the 20th century, but his international fame rests primarily on a single song: 'Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu' (known worldwide simply as 'Volare'), which he wrote and performed in 1958. The song won the Sanremo Music Festival, won two Grammy Awards, and reached number one in multiple countries, it remains one of the most recognised Italian songs in the world. A large bronze statue of Modugno, arms outstretched in the characteristic gesture of the song, stands in the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele at the cliff edge of the old town, and the town celebrates its famous son every year.

Did you know? 'Volare' (Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu) by Domenico Modugno was the first song to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Song of the Year simultaneously, and it remains one of the best-selling Italian singles of all time, having been covered or recorded in more than 100 different versions worldwide.
