Notre-Dame de Paris is the most celebrated Gothic cathedral in the world. Construction began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully, and the cathedral was largely complete by 1345, a 182-year labour of faith. Its twin towers, flying buttresses, magnificent rose windows, and the legendary gargoyles that glare down over Paris have defined the very image of Gothic architecture for seven centuries.
Victor Hugo's 1831 novel "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" saved the cathedral from planned demolition and sparked a 19th-century restoration under Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who added the famous spire. On 15 April 2019, a catastrophic fire consumed the spire and most of the roof. The global outpouring of support raised over €840 million for reconstruction. Following a monumental five-year effort by craftspeople using medieval techniques, the cathedral reopened on 7 December 2024 more beautiful than ever. The restored interior reveals stonework cleaned to pale gold, and the new treasury is extraordinary.
