About Champs-Élysées
The world's most famous avenue, stretching 1.9 kilometres from Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe, lined with luxury boutiques, cinemas and famous cafés.
The Champs-Élysées, the Elysian Fields, is the most famous street in the world and the symbolic heart of Paris. Stretching 1.9 kilometres from the Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe, it is 70 metres wide and lined with chestnut trees whose shade makes it one of Paris's finest walks. Its origins are humble: in 1616, it was simply an extension of the Tuileries garden axis, laid out by Marie de Médicis. André Le Nôtre later extended and formalized the avenue in 1667 for Louis XIV.
Today the upper section towards the Arc de Triomphe is lined with international luxury brands, flagship stores, car showrooms, cinemas, and historic cafés like Fouquet's. Every year the avenue hosts the Bastille Day military parade on 14 July, one of the world's great public spectacles. The Tour de France traditionally finishes with final laps along the Champs-Élysées. At Christmas, the avenue is transformed by 400 illuminated trees and the most visited Christmas market in France, drawing millions of visitors.
Did you know? The Champs-Élysées was originally a swampy field outside Paris, transformed into a promenade by Marie de Médicis in 1616.
