The Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Palermo (GAM) is housed in the beautifully restored former convent of Sant'Anna in the northern historic centre, close to the Teatro Massimo. It contains approximately 900 works of Sicilian and southern Italian painting and sculpture from the late 18th century through the early 20th century, representing the most comprehensive public collection of this period's Sicilian art in existence. The collection spans the Neo-classical, Romantic, Realist, Symbolist, and early Modernist periods, and reveals a tradition of Sicilian painting that was both deeply rooted in local identity and fully engaged with the European avant-garde of its time. The landscape painters of the late 19th century, above all Francesco Lojacono, capture the particular quality of Sicilian light with extraordinary precision. The sculptors, particularly Vincenzo Gemito and his followers, produced work of remarkable psychological intensity.
