About Mondello Beach

Mondello is Palermo's beach, a crescent of fine white sand and shallow turquoise water set in a bay framed by the dramatic limestone headlands of Monte Pellegrino to the east and Monte Gallo to the west. For centuries it was a lagoon of brackish water and reeds, used only by fishermen. In the late 19th century, a Belgian company drained the lagoon, built a seaside resort, and constructed the elaborate Art Nouveau bathhouse, the Stabilimento Balneare, that still stands on stilts in the water today, one of the finest surviving examples of Sicilian Liberty architecture. Mondello became the summer playground of Palermo's upper classes, and the belle époque villas they built along the seafront still stand. Today it is a democratic beach, packed in summer with all of Palermo, from children building sandcastles to elderly Palermitani playing cards in the shade, and the seafront restaurants specialise in the fried mixed seafood and pasta dishes that are the quintessential Sicilian seaside lunch.
Did you know? Until the late 19th century, Mondello was a malaria-ridden lagoon; a Belgian company drained it and built the Art Nouveau resort between 1892 and 1910, transforming swamp into paradise.
