About The Veiled Christ (Cappella Sansevero)

A veil of solid marble lies so softly over the dead Christ that visitors still lean in to check it is not cloth, carved from a single block in 1753.

The Veiled Christ (Cristo Velato) is the masterpiece of the Cappella Sansevero and one of the most admired marble sculptures in the world. It was carved in 1753 by the Neapolitan sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino, who laid a transparent shroud over the dead Christ with the veil and the body cut from a single block of marble. It was commissioned by Raimondo di Sangro, seventh Prince of Sansevero, who first engaged the veiled-marble specialist Antonio Corradini; when Corradini died in 1752 leaving only a terracotta model, the work passed to Sanmartino.

The delicacy of the veil gave rise to a lasting legend that di Sangro, a celebrated alchemist, had petrified a real cloth by a secret process. Historical documents disprove it: a payment recorded on 16 December 1752 in the archive of the Bank of Naples describes a statue covered with a veil of the same marble. The chapel, a di Sangro family shrine, also holds Corradini's Modesty and Queirolo's Disillusion and, in the crypt below, the Prince's enigmatic Anatomical Machines.

Did you know? Below the chapel stand the prince's two 'Anatomical Machines': skeletons laced with a full network of hardened blood vessels. Rumour said he had injected living bodies; modern study found only beeswax, iron wire and silk.
