Mostar's only surviving Ottoman bathhouse, a 16th-century hamam beside the old town, now restored as a small museum of Turkish bath culture under its lead domes.
The Hamam is the only preserved Ottoman public bathhouse in Mostar, a modest stone building with lead domes beside the old-town square, now run as the Hamam Museum. It dates from the 16th century, though the exact year and builder are unknown, with no founding inscription surviving; it is usually called the Čejvan Ćehaja Hamam after a 16th-century Mostar benefactor. The bath fell out of use for more than a century, and in the 1800s a house was even built over its collapsed changing room.
Left in very poor condition by long neglect and by damage in the 1992 to 1995 war, the hamam was carefully restored in what was described as the largest reconstruction in Mostar after the Old Bridge complex, funded from local, French and Turkish sources, keeping the surviving under-floor heating system. Rather than return to use as a working bath, it reopened as a museum, where panels explain the culture of the Turkish bath and glass cases show the vessels and clogs that bathers once used.
