About Bišćević House

A beautifully preserved Ottoman-era town house by the Neretva, its men's reception room jutting boldly out over the river on tall stone pillars, now a small family museum.

The Bišćević House, or Bišćevića ćošak, is one of the most complete Ottoman-era town houses in Mostar, standing beside the Neretva and protected as a national monument. Dated to around the 18th century, it first belonged to the Bišćević family, Muslim townsfolk settled in Mostar since the early 17th century. Its signature is the ćošak, a corner reception room thrown out over the river on two very tall stone supports, the boldest piece of Ottoman domestic architecture in the city.

Behind high walls, built against the wind and the fierce Herzegovina sun and for privacy, the house keeps the classic Ottoman division into a selamluk, the men's part with its guest rooms and courtyard, and a family quarter. There is a pebbled courtyard with a fountain, a wooden gallery and rooms furnished with low sofas, carved cupboards and carpets. Opened by its owners as a small private museum of the traditional Ottoman house, it was damaged in the 1990s war and repaired afterwards.

Did you know? The house's famous ćošak, or corner room, is a men's reception room that juts out over the Neretva on two very tall stone pillars, considered the boldest piece of Ottoman domestic architecture in Mostar.
