About Palazzo Reale

The historic Royal Palace adjacent to Milan Cathedral, former seat of the rulers of Milan from the Visconti to Napoleon, now one of Italy's premier exhibition venues hosting major international art exhibitions throughout the year.

The Palazzo Reale, the Royal Palace, stands immediately beside the Duomo, on the south side of the Piazza del Duomo, and has been the centre of political power in Milan for nearly a thousand years. The site was the seat of the Visconti lords from the fourteenth century, the Sforza dukes from the fifteenth, and later the Spanish governors, the Austrian Habsburg rulers, and Napoleon's Viceroy of Italy. The building was largely rebuilt in its current Neoclassical form in the eighteenth century under the Empress Maria Theresa. Today the historic state apartments house the Museo del Novecento (museum of twentieth-century Italian art, see separate entry) on their upper floors, while the main floors host the temporary exhibition programme of the Palazzo Reale Foundation, one of the most ambitious and well-attended exhibition programmes in Italy, bringing major international art exhibitions to Milan throughout the year.

Did you know? Ludovico il Moro's court at the Palazzo Reale in the 1490s was one of the most brilliant cultural courts in Renaissance Europe, Leonardo da Vinci, Donato Bramante, and the poet Gasparo Visconti were all simultaneously guests of the duke.
