About San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore

Milan's "Sistine Chapel", a hidden Renaissance church entirely covered in dazzling sixteenth-century frescoes by Bernardino Luini and other Leonardesque painters, creating one of the most beautiful painted interiors in northern Italy.

San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is Milan's best-kept secret, a modest Renaissance church exterior concealing one of the most spectacular painted interiors in northern Italy, justly called the "Milanese Sistine Chapel." The church was built in 1503 and was the private chapel of the most important Benedictine convent in Lombardy. The interior is completely covered in luminous frescoes painted primarily by Bernardino Luini (c.1481-1532), a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci, between about 1522 and 1529. The frescoes cover every wall, pillar, and arch in a rich programme of New Testament scenes, saints, and decorative borders. The church is divided into two sections by a wall: the public nave and the nuns' choir behind, with the frescoes in both sections painted with equal splendour. The Archaeological Museum of Milan is housed in the adjacent former monastery buildings, containing an outstanding collection of Roman and Barbarian-era artefacts.

Did you know? San Maurizio is often called the "Sistine Chapel of Milan", but unlike the Vatican chapel, it is rarely crowded, and you can often have the extraordinary frescoed interior almost to yourself.
