About Basilica of Saint-Victor
One of France's oldest churches, dating to the 5th century, with a remarkable crypt containing Roman and early Christian sarcophagi beneath its fortress-like walls.
The Basilique Saint-Victor is one of the most historically significant churches in France, its origins reaching back to the late 4th century when a monk named Cassian established a monastery on the site where, according to tradition, the early Christian martyr Victor had been executed. The current fortress-like structure, with its massive walls and defensive towers, was built primarily in the 11th through 14th centuries and was designed to be defensible, this part of Marseille's waterfront was exposed to pirates and Saracen raids throughout the medieval period. The extraordinary crypt below the church is the most ancient part, containing Roman-era sarcophagi, early Christian tombs, and the cave associated with Saint Cassian himself. Every year on February 2nd, candlelit boats bring the Black Virgin statue through the city in a moving ceremony.
