About Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista al Rosario

Giuseppe Zimbalo's final masterpiece, a Leccese baroque church of extraordinary complexity and emotion, considered by some scholars to be the finest interior of the baroque period in all of southern Italy.

The church of San Giovanni Battista al Rosario is the final and some say the finest work of Giuseppe Zimbalo, the greatest architect of the Leccese baroque, begun in 1691 when the architect was already in his seventies and left unfinished at his death in 1710, the building being completed by others in 1728. The church is less visited than the Basilica di Santa Croce but arguably more interesting: while Santa Croce is primarily a facade spectacle, San Giovanni al Rosario has an extraordinary interior. The single-nave church is covered from floor to ceiling in carved pietra leccese decoration, not the exuberant grotesquerie of the early baroque but a more mature, more technically accomplished, and more emotionally complex decorative programme that integrates architecture, sculpture, and painting into a total work of art. The church is particularly notable for the extraordinary quality of the stone carving, which at this late period reaches a virtuosity that the earlier baroque buildings do not quite equal.

Did you know? Giuseppe Zimbalo worked on San Giovanni al Rosario from 1691 until his death in 1710, and the church was completed by his students, making it the work of at least two artistic generations and a building that evolved continuously over nearly 40 years.
