About Ancient Rudiae

The ancient Messapian and Roman city outside Lecce, birthplace of the poet Quintus Ennius, the 'father of Latin poetry', with remarkable archaeological remains and an active excavation site.

Rudiae is an ancient city located just outside the modern boundaries of Lecce, and it has a unique place in the history of Western literature: it was the birthplace of Quintus Ennius (239-169 BC), the poet known as the 'father of Latin literature'. Ennius came from the multicultural Salento and was trilingual from birth, speaking Oscan, Greek, and Latin; he was brought to Rome by Cato the Elder and became one of the most important literary figures of the early Republic. His great epic poem the Annales, now surviving only in fragments, was the most ambitious Latin literary work before Virgil's Aeneid and enormously influential on all subsequent Latin poetry. The archaeological site of Rudiae preserves remains of the city walls, a theatre, an amphitheatre, and numerous necropolises that have yielded some of the finest Messapian and Greek ceramics in the provincial museum.

Did you know? Quintus Ennius, born at Rudiae near Lecce, is credited with introducing the dactylic hexameter, the metre of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, into Latin poetry, an innovation that shaped all subsequent Latin and European epic verse including Virgil's Aeneid.
