About Keswick
The lively market-town capital of the northern Lakes, below Skiddaw by Derwentwater, with its island Moot Hall, a pencil museum, and a hundred fell walks from the door.
Keswick is the main market town of the northern Lake District, on the River Greta just north of Derwentwater and below the fell of Skiddaw, with a population of about 4,658. In its market place stands the Moot Hall, first built in 1571 and rebuilt in its present form in 1813, now a tourist information centre. Graphite from the nearby fells gave rise to a pencil-making industry from the 18th century, later the Cumberland Pencil Company.
Pencil production moved from the town to Workington in 2006, but the Derwent/Cumberland Pencil Museum in Keswick tells the story and displays what it claims is the world's largest coloured pencil. Castlerigg Stone Circle lies on the town's eastern edge, the Theatre by the Lake opened in 1999, and the town hosts the annual Keswick Convention. Keswick is a major base for walking the surrounding fells.
Did you know? Keswick is, improbably, a birthplace of the pencil: graphite from the nearby fells gave rise to a pencil industry from the 18th century. Its Pencil Museum shows what it claims is the world's largest coloured pencil.
