About Hill Top

Beatrix Potter's 17th-century farmhouse at Near Sawrey, bought with her book royalties and left to the National Trust; kept as she knew it, and the setting of several of her tales.

Hill Top is a 17th-century farmhouse at Near Sawrey, near Hawkshead, bought by Beatrix Potter in 1905 with the income from her books. She used it as a country retreat and a working farm, and it appears in several of her tales, including 'The Tale of Tom Kitten', 'The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck' and 'The Tale of Samuel Whiskers'.

On her death in 1943, Potter left Hill Top to the National Trust, which keeps it as a writer's house shown much as she knew it. She also left the Trust nearly all her property, over 4,000 acres of land and sixteen farms, the largest gift it had received at the time, helping to preserve land now within the Lake District National Park. It is now a popular visitor attraction, with timed entry.

Did you know? Beatrix Potter bought Hill Top in 1905 with the royalties from her little books, and the farmhouse and village appear in several of her tales, including The Tale of Tom Kitten and Jemima Puddle-Duck.
