About Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace)
The great palace of Genoa's medieval republic, seat of the Doges for centuries, now a major cultural centre hosting world-class exhibitions and events.
The Palazzo Ducale is the seat of Genoa's former republic and one of the most important Gothic-Renaissance buildings in Italy. The first palace was built on this site in the thirteenth century when Genoa was at the height of its power as one of the Mediterranean's great maritime republics. The building was extensively rebuilt and enlarged in the sixteenth century to its current imposing form, with its two great internal courtyards and the distinctive clock tower visible from Piazza De Ferrari. For centuries it was the seat of the Doge, the elected head of the Genoese Republic, and the location of the city's courts, treasury, and administrative offices. After the Napoleonic conquest and the end of the Republic, the palace served various civic functions. In the 1990s it was extensively restored and converted into a major cultural centre, now one of the most active temporary exhibition venues in northern Italy, hosting major international art shows that draw visitors from across Europe.
Did you know? The Genoese Republic lasted 698 years (1099-1797), making it one of the longest-lived republican governments in pre-modern history.
