About Connemara National Park

A wild expanse of mountain, bog and heath in the heart of Connemara, crowned by the cone of Diamond Hill, whose boardwalk trails give grand views over the Twelve Bens, the coast and grazing Connemara ponies.

Connemara National Park, near Letterfrack in the north-west of County Galway, protects about 2,000 hectares of mountain, blanket bog, heath and woodland, once part of the Kylemore estate. Opened in 1980, it is one of Ireland's national parks and a showcase of the wild Connemara landscape. Its centrepiece is Diamond Hill, a shapely 442-metre peak whose name is said to come from the glitter of quartz on its slopes.

A network of looped trails, laid with boardwalk and stone to protect the fragile ground, climbs from the free visitor centre to the summit ridge, with sweeping views of the Twelve Bens, Kylemore, the coast and its islands. The park is a realm of western blanket bog, home to bog cotton and insect-eating sundews, to red deer and foxes, and to the hardy Connemara pony, Ireland's only native pony breed.
