About Galway City Museum

The city's free museum beside the Spanish Arch, telling Galway's medieval, maritime and modern story, with a traditional Galway hooker hung in its atrium and the treasures of the old Claddagh village.

Galway City Museum stands on the River Corrib beside the Spanish Arch, a sleek modern building of 2007 that won an architectural award and leaves an open plaza between itself and the medieval wall. Entry is free. Its galleries trace the city's long history, from the medieval town of the Tribes, through Gaelic Ireland and the revolutionary years, to the life of the sea and the Claddagh.

A nine-metre Galway hooker, the traditional red-sailed boat of the bay, hangs in its atrium. The collections include carved stones and heraldic panels from the vanished houses of the Tribes, the boat-building tools of the last Claddagh boatwright, the shawl and apron of the old fishing village, the city's ceremonial sword and mace, and medieval pottery and coins that tell of Galway's trade across the Atlantic.

Did you know? Galway City Museum, opened beside the Spanish Arch in 2007, is free to enter and traces the city's medieval, Gaelic, maritime and revolutionary history.
