About Basilica di Santo Spirito
Brunelleschi's last great church, completed after his death, with a hidden Michelangelo crucifix in the sacristy and a lively piazza that is the social heart of the Oltrarno.
Santo Spirito was the last church designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, conceived in 1428 but only begun after his death in 1446 and completed in 1487. The design represents the mature expression of his architectural ideals: a Latin cross plan with a continuous colonnade of grey pietra serena columns running around all four sides of the interior, creating a rippling, rhythmic sense of space that many architects consider the most perfectly unified interior of the Renaissance.
The church faces the Piazza di Santo Spirito, the most lived-in square in the Oltrarno, with a daily morning market and a gathering place for locals in the evenings. In the sacristy (by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder) a wooden crucifix is preserved that is generally attributed to the young Michelangelo, possibly made around 1492 when he was about seventeen years old, in exchange for the prior's permission to study anatomy on cadavers from the nearby hospital.
Did you know? A wooden crucifix in the sacristy of Santo Spirito is believed to be Michelangelo's earliest surviving sculpture, made around age 17 in exchange for permission to dissect human cadavers at the adjacent hospital.
