About Piazza della Repubblica

Florence's grand 19th-century square, built on the site of the ancient Roman forum, with a triumphal arch and historic cafés including Gilli and Paszkowski.

The Piazza della Repubblica occupies the site of the ancient Roman forum of Florentia, the colony founded by Julius Caesar's veterans in 59 BC. For centuries after the Roman city's decline, this remained the commercial and market centre of Florence, known as the Mercato Vecchio and the site of the Jewish Ghetto. In the 1880s and 1890s, as Florence was being modernised following its brief role as capital of unified Italy, the entire medieval quarter was demolished in a controversial urban renewal project, and the current piazza, with its wide arcades, grand café terraces, and the triumphal arch bearing the inscription 'The ancient centre of the city restored from age-old squalor to new life', was created. The demolished neighbourhood is now considered an act of cultural vandalism. The square is a meeting point and social hub, home to Florence's most celebrated historic cafés.

Did you know? The entire medieval Mercato Vecchio quarter, centuries of Florentine urban history, was demolished between 1885 and 1895 to build this square; the act is now considered one of the greatest examples of 19th-century urban vandalism in Italy.
