About Iveagh Gardens
Dublin's secret garden, a hidden 19th-century pleasure ground behind the National Concert Hall with a fountain, cascade, rustic grottos, rosarium, and maze, largely undiscovered by tourists.
The Iveagh Gardens, hidden behind the National Concert Hall on Earlsfort Terrace in the heart of Georgian Dublin, are one of the city's best-kept secrets. While St Stephen's Green, just a short distance away, draws enormous crowds, the Iveagh Gardens remain largely undiscovered, a tranquil, atmospheric Victorian pleasure garden that feels entirely separate from the city around it.
The gardens were laid out in 1863 to a design by Ninian Niven, and enlarged for the 1865 Dublin International Exhibition. They later passed to the Guinness family (the Earls of Iveagh), who gave them to University College Dublin, and they are now in the care of the state.
The gardens' features include a dramatic cascade and fountain at the centre, rustic grottos, an archery ground, a maze, a rosarium, sunken lawn, wilderness area with mature trees, and an American garden. The whole is enclosed by the high stone walls of the surrounding buildings, creating an enclosed, secret world that surprises visitors who find it.
The Iveagh Gardens are open to the public and free to enter. They are popular for summer concerts and are particularly beautiful in spring when the roses are in bloom.
Did you know? The Iveagh Gardens are Dublin's best-kept secret, hidden behind the National Concert Hall, just minutes from St Stephen's Green, they remain virtually unknown to tourists despite being free and open every day.
