About The Irish Whiskey Museum
An interactive museum in a Georgian building near Grafton Street telling the full story of Irish whiskey, from its medieval monastic origins through decline and renaissance, with guided tastings.
The Irish Whiskey Museum, opened in 2014 in a handsome Georgian townhouse on Grafton Street, tells the complete story of Irish whiskey, one of the world's great spirits and Ireland's most famous export.
The museum traces the history of whiskey-making in Ireland from its origins in early medieval monasteries (Irish monks are believed to have brought distillation techniques from the Middle East in the 6th century) through the golden age of the 19th century, when Ireland had over 200 distilleries and Irish whiskey was the most popular spirit in the world, through the catastrophic decline caused by American Prohibition, Irish independence, trade wars, and the temperance movement, and finally through the remarkable renaissance that has seen Ireland return to prominence as a whiskey-producing nation since the 1980s.
The tour includes interactive exhibits explaining the whiskey-making process, pot still distillation, triple distillation, the role of barrels and maturation, and concludes with a guided tasting of several Irish whiskeys, exploring the differences between the major styles and distilleries.
Did you know? In the 1880s Ireland had over 160 distilleries and produced the world's most popular whiskey, American Prohibition, trade wars, and the temperance movement brought the industry to near-extinction by 1980.
