About Semper Opera House
One of the world's most celebrated opera houses, designed by Gottfried Semper, home to the Staatskapelle Dresden with its 475-year musical tradition.
The Semperoper, Dresden State Opera House, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world. The first building by Gottfried Semper opened in 1841 but burned down in 1869. His rebuilt version opened in 1878, only to be destroyed again in the Allied bombing of February 1945. The present building, restored to Semper's original plans, reopened on 13 February 1985, exactly forty years after the bombing, with a performance of Weber's Der Freischütz, the same opera that had opened the original building. The Renaissance Revival exterior features a curved semi-circular facade with a distinctive pedimented entrance, crowned by a quadriga sculpture. Inside, the auditorium is an intimate horseshoe of red and gold, famous for its superb acoustics. The resident Staatskapelle Dresden, founded in 1548, is one of the oldest orchestras in the world, with chief conductors including Richard Strauss, Karl Böhm, and Carlos Kleiber among its illustrious alumni.
