About Frauenkirche

Dresden's iconic Lutheran church, destroyed by Allied bombing in February 1945 and painstakingly rebuilt by 2005 as a worldwide symbol of reconciliation.

The Frauenkirche, Church of Our Lady, was completed in 1743 to designs by master builder George Bähr, its stone dome rising 91 metres above the city. On 13–14 February 1945, Allied bombing raids created a firestorm that incinerated Dresden; the church survived the first night but collapsed two days later under intense heat. East Germany preserved the ruins as a war memorial for decades. After reunification, an international effort began in 1994: over 8,000 original stones were catalogued from the rubble, matched by computer to their exact original positions, and reinstated. New Elbe sandstone fills the gaps, deliberately left lighter to contrast with the fire-blackened originals still visible in the facade, a permanent reminder of destruction and rebirth. The restored church was consecrated on 30 October 2005. The gilded cross atop the dome was crafted by Alan Smith of Coventry, whose father had flown in the RAF raid, as a personal act of Anglo-German reconciliation. Today it draws millions of visitors annually.
