Saxon Switzerland, Sächsische Schweiz, is the dramatic sandstone landscape straddling the Elbe valley some 40 kilometres southeast of Dresden, now protected as a National Park (established 1990). The area is characterised by spectacular formations of Elbe Sandstone: vertical rock towers, narrow gorges called 'Gründe,' table mountains, and the Elbe cutting through a deep valley flanked by wooded cliffs. The landscape was carved by millions of years of erosion and the Elbe's course. The most famous sight is the Bastei, a rock formation of clustered sandstone pillars rising 194 metres above the Elbe, connected by the Bastei Bridge (1851), one of the most photographed natural features in Germany. The area was beloved by Caspar David Friedrich, who painted its landscapes in some of his most celebrated works, and attracted the Romantic painters of the Dresden School. Walking, climbing, and cycling routes of all difficulties cross the National Park; the major towns of Pirna, Königstein fortress, and Bad Schandau serve as bases for exploration.
