About Moritzburg Castle
Augustus the Strong's magnificent Baroque hunting palace rising from an artificial lake, 20 km north of Dresden, famous as the filming location of the beloved 1973 Cinderella film.
Moritzburg Castle is one of the most striking sights in Saxony, a massive Baroque hunting palace sitting in the middle of an artificial lake created by damming a stream, its four rounded corner towers reflecting in the still water. The site has been a hunting seat since the sixteenth century; Elector Moritz of Saxony built the first simple hunting lodge here in 1546, giving the castle its name. The magnificent Baroque palace was built for Augustus the Strong between 1723 and 1736, designed by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann, the same architect responsible for the Zwinger in Dresden. The interior is lavishly decorated with over 100 antler trophies, original Baroque furniture, porcelain collections, and a remarkable feather room (Federzimmer) decorated entirely with exotic bird feathers. The castle achieved international fame as the principal filming location for the beloved East German fairy-tale film Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel (Three Wishes for Cinderella, 1973), which remains the most popular Christmas film in Germany and the Czech Republic.
