About St Fagans National Museum of History
A beloved free open-air museum west of Cardiff, where forty-odd historic Welsh buildings, saved from across the country, have been rebuilt to walk through, around an Elizabethan manor house.
St Fagans National Museum of History (Sain Ffagan), a few miles west of central Cardiff, is one of Europe's leading open-air museums. It opened in 1948 as the Welsh Folk Museum, after the Earl of Plymouth donated St Fagans Castle and its grounds in 1946. More than forty historic buildings, saved from across Wales, have been re-erected on site to be walked through, from cottages and farms to a chapel, school and shops.
At its heart stands St Fagans Castle, a Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house. A roughly £30 million, six-year redevelopment was completed in October 2018, and in 2019 the museum was named Art Fund Museum of the Year, winning the £100,000 prize; in 2011 it had been voted the UK's favourite visitor attraction. Entry is free; a conservation project on the manor house may limit interior access.
